What are Restylane Skinboosters?

Restylane Skinboosters are a revolutionary anti-aging treatment, a non-surgical option for facial rejuvenation and skin restoration. Skinboosters naturally smooth and hydrate the skin from the inside. They result in luminous skin with a natural and beautiful glow.

Restylane SkinBoosters
Skinboosters are similar to dermal fillers in that they contain a naturally occurring substance which exists in our skin. This substance works to maintain hydration of the skin by binding closely with water and supporting vital collagen and elastin, which work to maintain the integrity and suppleness of our skin.

As we age, we lose collagen and elastin, resulting in the skins repair mechanisms slowing down creating poor skin tone and texture, lack of elasticity, and the formation of wrinkles and folds.

Restylane SkinBoosters

Unlike dermal fillers, Skinboosters do not add volume or structure to the skin – they work in more subtle ways to improve the overall skin balance and ‘boost’ the appearance of the skin.

There are two treatment protocols:

  1. Collagen stimulation: One treatment every month for 3 months – this stimulated the fibroblasts (special skin cells) to increase their collagen production.
  2. Maintenance regimen: One treatment every 3 to 4 months – to maintain skin hydration and glow – as well as to keep wrinkles at bay.

In addition to these two choices, one can also choose whether or not you can handle the downtime of multiple injections, or would prefer the use of a blunt cannula to limit swelling and busing.

Liquid Facelift

The liquid facelift is the non-surgical method whereby the face is lifted using a combination of dermal fillers and Botox injections. Facial aging is as a result of numerous factors namely, genetics, sun-exposure, smoking, diet and exercise. All of these factors cause the face to sag – everything “droops”. More often than not if you are concerned about the lines on your face you will look in the mirror and gently pull the skin in the middle of your face upwards – that is what a liquid facelift aims to do. Gently Lift the face – without the risk or downtime of surgery.

liquid facelift

In order to create lift the face must be looked at holistically.

In order to do this your face is thoroughly assessed by your aesthetic doctor. Photos are taken and the problem areas are identified. With this information in mind, your face is cleaned and then marked out with a white eyeliner. Marking the face allows your doctor to identify which areas are deficient in volume. Our faces are never symmetrical (sleeping on a favorite side causes one side to sag more than the other) – marking also helps to clearly show which side has the deeper lines.

Juvederm Product Range

The liquid facelift starts with the dermal filler treatment – 3 points on the cheek are injected – this replaces volume that has been lost and also lifts the skin below the cheek. Together with the lifting effect, it also rejuvenated the eyes. As you are probably aware, the first place we look we when we see a face is the eyes. Friends, family and colleagues usually comment on how happy or well rested you look – this is all because of the filler treatment. This lifting lasts anywhere from a year to 18 months. Hyaluronic Acid – the substance found in fillers – has also been shown to stimulate collagen production. So in the months after the treatment, you will continue to look great.

Secondly a Botox Brow Lift is performed – the frown and the tail of the brow are injected. This relaxes the frown (so you appear happier!) and gently lifts the eyebrows. It is a great treatment that will leave you looking refreshed and energized. At the end of the day the liquid facelift is all about facial rejuvenation and less about looking like you’ve have a facelift (which is probably a good thing!).

Botox

The treatment itself is relatively pain-less but if you are at all concerned please ask your doctor for a numbing cream to be applied beforehand – they will happily oblige.

Botox Injection Sites

Botox injection sites are found in the frown, on the forehead and around the eyes. When these sites are injected, the muscles are relaxed and the overlying wrinkles are treated. Different muscles have different functions – so one must be aware that if you relax a muscle too much, it will lose its function and the resulting look will be unnatural. That is why the current trend in Aesthetic Medicine is too inject less Botox and create natural results. You can always visit your Doctor for a top-up, but if you have had too much Botox, you would have to wait 4 months for the effect to wear off.

Botox Injection Sites

Men have finally caught on to the benefits of Botox!

Having a standard set of Botox injection sites is important for any practitioner – it allows your doctor to treat 99% of the population effectively. That said, some people are born with muscles that are either bigger or in a slightly different place than those found in the text books. Thus, for Botox, each client should be thoroughly assessed to ensure that the placement of the Botox injection sites is correct for them. This ensures that the best results are achieved.

The following are a general guide as to where your doctor may place your Botox injection sites:

Botox Injection Sites

Frown: 5 injections spread across the frown to relax the procures and corregator muscles.

Botox Injection Sites

Botox Eye Wrinkles: 3 sets of injections for both sides – to treat the obicularis oris muscle.

Botox Injection Sites

Botox Forehead: 5 Injection sites into the frontalis muscle.

Botox injections are typically pretty pain-less. That said, if you are at all worried ask your doctor for a numbing cream to be applied prior to the treatment.

Eye Fillers

Eye fillers are a treatment that can have an astounding affect on the way a person looks and feels. Many people walk around looking tired and sad –  most of the time this is as a result of the way their face looks. When we age we lose the fat in our cheeks and they begin to sag. The sagging cheeks then pull on the skin just below the eye, and a line forms – known as the tear trough line (named so as it makes you look sad). Before eye fillers came along, the only way to restore volume here was to inject fat that had been taken from somewhere else on your body. Now while a bit of liposuction and some facial rejuvenation are great, they require sedation and surgery – and with that comes downtime, pain, bruising and swelling. Since the arrival of under eye fillers, we have been able to offer clients an in and out service that is relatively painless and has little to no downtime.

Under Eye Fillers

Deep lines under the eyes can be treated with fillers.

The eye fillers procedure takes about an hour – most of that time is spent explaining the treatment and how it works as well as marking out the face to ensure that the correct areas are injected. The markings are made with a white eyeliner – so it easily comes off with a facial wipe – so no need to worry about walking around with lines on your face after your eye fillers treatment! If you are concerned about pain, a topical cream can be applied before the treatment to numb the area. As a general rule, mid face fillers aren’t sore! Below is a video of a doctor injecting eye fillers – it really is a great treatment!

Wrinkle Treatments Cape Town Somerset West

What causes the skin to age?

External factors such as increased sun exposure, wind exposure and pollution can all result in wrinkles and discolorations. Wrinkle Treatments by Dr Wade can be done in Somerset West and Cape Town. Diet and poor lifestyle habits such as smoking and not exercising also play a role. A lifetime of stress (in some cases only half a lifetime!) results in the repetitive muscular movements of facial expression – these cause wrinkles. Sudden weight loss, although great, can also cause the skin to age as you lose fat within the facial fat pads – and your face droops and sags.

Wrinkle Treatments Cape Town Somerset West

Wrinkle Treatments Cape Town Somerset West

When we are born we have the most beautiful young, supple skin – the reason being as our skin is full of a substance called Hyaluronic Acid which acts to hydrate the skin. As we age, we lose Hyaluronic acid and our skin loses the soft supple nature that it once had. This is an internal factor as to why we look older. This process accelerates from the age of 30 – our skin produces less and the rate of destruction is higher.

Wrinkle Treatments Cape Town Somerset West

The above factors cause lines, wrinkles and folds to develop. Your skin loses volume and your face changes shape. How fast all of this happens is dependent on what we have already mentioned. Living a healthy life today and protecting your skin from the sun can help to reduce the speed to which you age. In anti-aging medicine it is never to late to change your life and see results.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are folds in the skin and there are two types. Dynamic wrinkles occur over time from repeated muscle use like frowning and smiling – if present for long enough they can develop into static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are always visible and are due to a lack of skin elasticity. They are caused by sun damage, smoking, genetics and prolonged dynamic wrinkling.

Injectable Treatment Options

Botox

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) is a purified protein derived from Clostridium Botulinum that is used to reduce unwanted dynamic facial wrinkles. It acts by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle and in so doing prevents muscular contraction. Botox only works on dynamic wrinkles – static wrinkles will need different treatment options. The effects of Botox last anywhere from 3 to 6 months – it really just depends on the dose, your metabolism and if you have had Botox before. The more often you have Botox, you will need less amount of treatments per year.

Hyaluronic Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin. As we age we lose this substance and our skin loses its once youthful tone and appearance. Aging also results in loss of fat from our facial fat pads. A young-looking face has round contours, high cheekbones and a well-defined jawline. The reason we look the way we do is partly because of the bones in our face but partly due to these fat pads beneath the skin. As they lose fat the skin above them begins to sag and as a result our cheek bones move down our face and we get static lines around our nose and mouth. The pulling of the sagging skin then also creates depressions and bags under our eye.

Juvederm Filler Range

The treatment of facial sagging and static lines is Fillers. These fillers are injected with a very fine needle into the area overlying the cheek bone. Once injected the results are immediate and a gentle lift occurs whereby a new cheek is pulling up the skin from the lower face and as a result the lines around the mouth and nose are visibly reduced.

Before and After Cheek Fillers

Fillers generally last from 9 to 18 months depending on where they are placed. Over time they are naturally reabsorbed by our body. The old way of injecting fillers was to inject only in the facial wrinkles of the lower face – this would remove the wrinkles but leave the client with an unnatural result. Current science and thinking points towards the cheek injections as the most effective method to give the most natural results.

Although there are no published statistics when in comes to the use of Botox in Cape Town, one can speculate that we have one of the highest rates of usage in the country. Not only is Cape Town a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, but it also tends to be slightly more liberal than the rest of the country when it comes to aesthetic treatments. For the vast majority of people that use Botox in Cape Town, their use of it is no secret to their friends and family. This stance in Cape Town contrasts the common scenario in the rest of the country whereby Botox injections are frowned (pun?) upon by society at large. The rest of the country has no problem getting Botox – the only difference is that unlike Cape Town residents, they keep it a secret.

Botox in Cape Town – Look for natural results.

There are many reason as to why clients keep their Botox treatments a secret. I have found that even some people using Botox in Cape Town keep their visit to my office a secret. That said, the number one reason why they do this is because they are worried about what other people might think. Society has a skewed view of Botox treatments – the media, celebrities and people that walk around looking like plastic all give them the idea that Botox isn’t something that a normal person does. The problem here is that all of the people that you see on the street that look like they have had Botox, have in fact had a poorly executed treatment. The people walking around with natural results are the ones that you would never even suspect have had a Botox treatment. This skews the public’s judgement. Getting Botox in Cape Town doesn’t have to mean that you end up looking frozen!

Botox in Cape Town - Natural Results

Botox is typically used in the upper third of the face.

One thing you need to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to get Botox in Cape Town is to look at what your Doctor stands for. If your Doctor is still pushing the plastic and fake look out of their offices, then, they may not be the right choice for you.

When you visit the Doctor that you have chosen make sure that you have a mental list of all the questions you would like to ask them. It is important that when getting Botox in Cape Town you make sure that you understand everything and that you feel comfortable. If you are worried about looking different after you have received your Botox in Cape Town then ask your Doctor if they can give you a test dose – so that you can see how it feels. A great place to get a test dose is in the frown – if after a week you are happy with the result you can always go back to your Doctor for more Botox in Cape Town.

Botox Somerset West Cape Town | Q&A

Botox Somerset West Cape Town

Dr Wade – Aesthetic Doctor

  1. Doctor, please tell us a bit about yourself?

Botox Somerset West Cape Town | Q&A: Sure, my name is Dr Wade Merchant, I am a qualified medical doctor with a special interest in anti-aging and aesthetic medicine.  I have a practice in Cape Town as well as in Somerset West.  I am originally from Durban but have been living in Cape Town for the past 5 years.

  1. What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox is basically a muscle relaxer.  We don’t inject the wrinkles but rather a small group of tiny muscles that create the wrinkles in the skin.  After the muscles have been relaxed for a while, the skin folds reduce dramatically.

  1. Does it hurt?

Not really.  It’s not like the needles you would see in adverts.  We use a very short and fine needle that most people don’t even feel while having the procedure.  We have a numbing cream that we apply beforehand, but 9 out of 10 patients prefer not to have the numbing cream applied.  Most of our patients say that shaping their eyebrows or having their teeth cleaned is a lot worse than having Botox.

  1. How quickly will it start to work?

Every patient is different, because we all have different anatomy.  Typically 7 days to 14 days after the treatment.

  1. How long does the effect last?

Again, for each patient it’s different.  Typically, 3-4 months with most patients reaching the 4 months mark.

  1. Is it safe?

When done right, yes!  It is critical to have the procedure done with a qualified medical doctor who has experience and the necessary qualifications to inject Botox. We only used FDA or CE approved products at our practice and in South Africa the industry is highly regulated.  Botox have been around since the late 80’s; it’s a trusted product and we see great results with each patient.

  1. Are there any skin care products that we can use to prevent or treat wrinkles?

There is no skin care range or lotion that can prevent or treat wrinkles as effectively as Botox.  A medical approach is the best way to take care of one’s skin.  However, I would always recommend the daily application of sunscreen.

  1. Any other benefits to this treatment?

Surprisingly, we also use Botox to treat migraines, depression, oily skin, gummy smiles, sweaty armpits, bladder problems and in stroke patients to reduce muscular movements.

From a skin care point of view, it is important to know that wrinkles create deep folds in the skin.  Once the folds have been reduced, the skin relaxes as per normal and the effect is a healthier and softer skin.  People suffering from oily or shiny skin use Botox to treat their oily skin and not necessarily their wrinkles. There are many great benefits!

  1. Will I be able to make facial expressions?

Yes, of course.  We only relax a small group of tiny muscles in the targeted area in order to replenish the skin to treat wrinkles.  Most of our clients start by only treating the frown area, on their second visit, they ask us to also treat the wrinkles around their eyes or forehead.

  1. Is there a specific demographic of patient?

Not at all, we see patients from all backgrounds.  Lawyers, estate agents, moms, dads, CEO’s of large companies, small business owners, wine makers, introverts, extroverts, models, fitness fanatics, academics, gay men, straight men, locals, tourists, young and old – there is really no specific demographic.  Most of our clients are confident individuals that like to live a full and healthy life and taking care of themselves is a great priority for them.

Micro-needling is the process whereby the skin is punctured with needles to a pre-determined depth, with the aim of stimulating the skins innate healing system. It can be used to rejuvenate the skin, help to treat fine lines and wrinkles, discolorations and even scarring.

Dermapen Somerset West Cape Town

Acne Scarring – Before and After

As the skin is needled, the body releases chemical signals that call on fibroblasts (the specialised skin cells that produce collagen – the substance that gives skin its youthful bounce) to gather in the needled area. They stimulate collagen production, and the result is skin rejuvenation.

Dermapen Somerset West Cape Town

There are two methods of skin needling – either by Derma-rollers or via the Dermapen. Derma-rollers can be performed by spa therapists and are relatively easy to operate. They are hand held rollers about ten centimeters in width with ten to twelve rows of needles. The device is rolled along the skin – the needles rotate around a wheel and then puncture the skin.

The Dermapen is the Gold Standard for micro-needling. It is a pen like device with 12 fine needles at its tip. When the pen is activated the needles are pushed in and out of the device at an adjustable speed and depth. Not only does this device have the benefit of using a variety of depths of needle puncture in a single treatment, but it also allows Dr Merchant to adjust the speed at which it punctures. An adjustable depth function is important as you would never want to needle the delicate skin around your eyes at the same depth at which you needle your cheeks – pain and swelling would result.

When scientists compared rollers to the Dermapen they found that when viewed under a microscope, the puncture holes of the Dermapen where much less traumatic than that of the rollers. This is because as the derma-roller needle rolls in and out it pulls with it a small chunk of skin – and you get more bleeding, bruising and discomfort. The Dermapen uses a direct puncture technique, with no rolling – therefore less bleeding and discomfort.

Dermapen Somerset West Cape Town

Dermapen Vs Dermaroller

With the Dermapen Dr Wade Merchant has the ability to directly target your problem areas with the comfort in knowing that he can adjust the treatment at any point to suit your specific needs.

Depending on your skin type, redness usually lasts one to two days – and can easily be covered up with make-up. Some people may also experience a light peel – much in the same way you peel when you get a sun burn (which is hopefully never if you follow Dr Merchant’s SPF advice!)

Botox Cape Town: Dr Wade is an aesthetic doctor with practices in both Cape Town and Somerset West. Dr Wade has extensive experience and uses the latest technology to ensure that all of his Cape Town clients look their best when completing a Botox or injectable treatment. This article deals with Botox and how it can be of use to improve the look and feel of skin.

Botox Cape Town - For Botox in Cape Town

Botox Cape Town – Dr Wade

Botox is a highly purified toxin produced by a particular strain of bacteria. Botox has a number of medical applications, including the treatment of facial spasms, migraines, squints, neck spasms, and spastic muscles in cerebral palsy children. Dr Wade aims to give his Cape Town clients the best service possible.

Botox Cape Town – Wrinkle Reduction.

In aesthetic medicine, Botox has found application in the treatment of facial wrinkles (mimetic or hyperkinetic lines) which are due to the underlying muscles of facial expression acting on the overlying skin to create a wrinkle. Botox can easily treat the lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabellar frown lines), at the sides of the eyes (crow’s feet), and across the forehead. Cape Town clients often describe the “11’s”  – these are the frown wrinkles that in some people form an “11” pattern.

Frown Before and After: Botox Cape Town | Dr Wade

Small amounts of Botox are injected into the offending muscles, causing temporary weakness of the muscle, and flattening of the overlying wrinkle. The onset of action of Botox takes 3-7 days, and lasts for about 4-6 months, at which time the Botox treatment can be repeated. In order to get the best out of Botox, Dr Wade urges his Cape Town clients to follow up before the wrinkles return.

More recently, Botox has been used in order to shape the eyebrows, allowing a slight lift of the outer one third of the eyebrow, without the need for surgery. This is also a temporary phenomenon, lasting some 4-6 months. Botox has also found a role in assisting scar revision surgery, by limiting tension on the wound.

Cape Town doctor, Dr Wade uses cosmetic Botox and most of his cases focus on the upper 1/3 of the face. We typically use 20 units  of Botox per pair of muscles (10 units per muscle) and there are 3 possible muscle groups that are routinely injected:

  1. Frown lines (corrigator muscle and occasionally procerus muscle).
  2. Transverse forehead lines (Frontalis muscle).
  3. Crow’s feet lines (orbicularis oculi muscle)

Injection Points for Botox Treatment | Cape Town | Dr Wade

The most common site for Botox in Cape Town is the Frown. Each site typically uses 20 units of Botox, so a maximum of 60 units can be used – all 3 areas. That said, the total amount of Botox used these days to ensure natural results is about 4o units. We also occasionally inject small volumes of Botox into other related sites, eg so-called bunny lines (sides of nose), vertical upper lip lines (smoker’s lines), and sub-brow region (for outer eyebrow lift).

Botox is also useful to minimise sweating in the armpits, and is injected in to the armpit skin at a dose of 50 units of Botox per side (100 units total). Botox is very effective to lessen sweating in this region and the effects may last up to 8 months.
