How to use Retinol creams and products

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A that boasts a long list of proven benefits. With results that include improved skin texture, boosted collagen production and diminished dark spots and acne, it’s easy to see why skin care enthusiasts all over the world swear by this active ingredient. But retinol use also comes with its fair share of side effects, like irritation and redness. So how do you incorporate retinol products into your at home skin care regime? Here are our guidelines on how to correctly use retinol.

Important

  • Patients considering using Retinol should be applying a medical grade SPF on a daily basis. Ideally a SPF 50. If you are unsure which SPF best suits your skin type and needs, please feel free to ask one of our qualified and experienced doctors or aesthetic therapists.

How to apply Retinol

  • Apply a pea-size amount on to the forehead, each cheek, chin, neck and chest areas – at night only.

Retinol usage

  • For the first 2-3 weeks: Apply twice a week until well tolerated.
  • From the third/fourth week: Alternate, by applying your retinol every second night until well tolerated.
  • From the fourth/fifth week: You may now apply your retinol every night if well tolerated.

Continuation

  • You may continue to use Retinol up until your skin can tolerate every night usage.
  • Should you experience that your skin is too red, dry or flaky; stop your retinol usage for 2 days and then restart.
  • If there are any issues please call or email us.
  • If your skin is unable to tolerate retinol on a daily basis, that is okay. As long as you have this important ingredient as part of your skincare regimen then you will reap the benefits.
  • If you still feel dry despite using it infrequently, ask one of our aesthetic therapists which moisturiser you can use to prevent this from happening.
  • Stop retinol 3 days prior to any skin treatment and continue after the treatment only when your skin feels normal again (usually 2 weeks post treatment).
