Does SPF Really Matter? Your Sunscreen Questions Answered
We all know that wearing sunscreen is important, but with so many products on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one or even fully understand what SPF means. At Natural Aesthetics, where we carry top sunscreen brands like DermExcel, NeoStrata, SkinCeuticals, Heliocare, Lamelle, Dermaceutic, Mesoestetic, and La Roche Posay, we’re here to break down your most common sunscreen questions.

DOES SPF REALLY MATTER?
Yes, SPF (Sun Protection Factor) absolutely matters. It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. For example, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. Even though the difference seems small, every bit counts—especially for those with sensitive skin, prone to hyperpigmentation, or at higher risk of skin cancer.

WHAT ARE MINERAL AND CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS?
Sunscreens generally fall into two categories: mineral (physical) and chemical. Mineral sunscreens, like those from SkinCeuticals and La Roche Posay, contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and sit on top of the skin, reflecting UV rays. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. Both are effective, but mineral sunscreens tend to be better for sensitive skin since they’re less likely to cause irritation.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REAPPLY SUNSCREEN?
Reapplication is key to effective sun protection. Regardless of the SPF, sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours when outdoors and every four hours when indoors, especially after activities like swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Even if you’re using a high-quality product like SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense, which is water-resistant, you still need to reapply as directed to maintain optimal protection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We understand that choosing the right skincare products, including sunscreen, can bring up a lot of questions. Whether you’re wondering how often to apply SPF or which sunscreen is best for your skin type, we’ve got you covered!
What’s the Difference Between UVA and UVB Protection?
UVA and UVB rays both damage the skin, but in different ways. UVB rays cause sunburn and play a big role in developing skin cancer. UVA rays, on the other hand, penetrate deeper and are the main culprits behind premature aging (think wrinkles and sunspots). Sunscreens labeled “broad-spectrum” protect you from both. All the brands we offer, including Heliocare and La Roche Posay, provide broad-spectrum coverage to ensure your skin is shielded from both types of rays.
What’s the Best SPF for Daily Use?
For daily use, dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher. Our range of sunscreens, like Lamelle Helase and Mesoestetic Mesoprotech, offers great options for everyday protection that can be seamlessly incorporated into your skincare routine. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you might want to opt for an SPF 50 to give your skin an extra level of defense.
Do I Need Sunscreen If It's Cloudy or I'm Indoors?
Yes! Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, so even on overcast days, sunscreen is essential. If you’re spending the day indoors, especially near windows, UVA rays can still reach your skin. Using a sunscreen like NeoStrata Sheer Physical Protection daily is a smart way to ensure you’re covered, rain or shine.
Are Sunscreens Safe for All Skin Types?
Absolutely. Whether you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, there’s a sunscreen designed for you. Brands like La Roche Posay and DermExcel are known for their formulas that cater to even the most sensitive skin types. If you’re acne-prone, Heliocare Oil-Free Gel is an excellent choice, while Dermaceutic Sun Ceutic 50+ offers advanced anti-aging benefits for more mature skin.
